On today’s episode of Bisaya Buddy, we are going to the Bukid! What? You don’t know what the Bukid is? Just watch the video and you will soon learn!

Don’t worry, going to the Bukid is fun, you’ll have a great time, I am sure. Some of the people you will find in the Bukid are fun, and “salt of the earth” type of folks.

Some of the most fun I’ve had in the Philippines was in the Bukid, and I always enjoy going back again and again. We have some good friends who live in the Bukid that we like to go visit. One of those good friends is Father Franco and Italian Priest who has been living in the Philippines for nearly 50 years already. Father Franco has a farm in the Bukid and he prepares all kinds of specialty foods in an effort to help the Indigenous people in the Bukid, and he is very successful at that!

I have seen so many interesting things in the Bukid. Sometimes you will see cockfights right along the road. You will almost always see people riding horses on the highway or out in the fields. One thing I always watch for in the Bukid is what I call a “Kanobao” – an albino Carabao! These are always fun to see.

Filipinos are used to having pets at home and they treat it as their own family as well. It is pretty obvious if you try to visit some of the Filipino households. I am a pet lover as well but among all those animals, I love cats the most.

Cats are undeniably cute especially when it is a furry one! Kids used to love furry and cute animals because of the comfort it gives to humans.

Animals are adorable in some ways. Maybe that’s the reason why most Filipinos love animals a lot. But how about you? Do you also love to take care of domestic animals at home and love them as your best friends?

Aside from making animals as your best friends, they can also be of good use in various purposes. Few of the animals in the Philippines helps humans earn a living through the different talents and skills that they can contribute to their owners. That is actually amusing!

Animals are not just simply animals. Why don’t you try indulge yourselves to animals. More importantly, don’t forget to visit the Philippines and see how awesome they animals in the Philippines are! You’ll surely realize that animals are amazing. You can discover it yourself.

The Philippines has some of the best fruit in the world, there can be no doubt about that! My favorites? I love Rambutan, Mangosteen, and Pomelo. But… surprisingly to many, I also love Durian!

Durian is the king of fruits, and a lot of foreigners also think it is the stinkiest fruit of them all!

What about you? What is your favorite tropical fruit? And, most importantly, do you like Durian? 🙂

You should always try to visit the fruit stand if you are in the Philippines. It seems like you will always find something different, something you have never seen before. Give those new fruits a try too!

You can have some fun by ordering your fruit selections in Bisaya! Talk to the vendor with some of your new Bisaya skills too! It will be fun both for you and the “tindero” (the salesman at the fruit stand), you’ll have a blast! You will! Trust me!

Well, we have been doing these Bisaya mini-courses now for several weeks.

Okay, so you learn how to speak a little bit of Bisaya, you learn some words, learn how to string together some sentences, and put a few phrases together as well. Then it hits you: how do you make plurals?

Well, most foreigners think they you just add an S at the end of the word. Sorry, Charlie, that is not correct. But, you see it online all the time in places where ex-pats gather, on Facebook, or wherever.

No, sorry it’s a little more complicated than that. But, once you learn how, it’s quite easy, because the same thing applies to all words. Mga. That is how you make a plural. That’s right, Mga. I know, If you can’t figure out what I’m talking about, much less how to pronounce that. Watch the video, and you will quickly learn. If you take some time to practice the pronunciation, you will get it. It is not an easy pronunciation for us Westerners though.

Have a look at the video!

Well, I hope that you find that to be quite easy because it is! Yes, the pronunciation will take a little bit of practice, but I am quite sure that you will have it down in no time. And, you can start pluralizing words the right way!

Good luck to you, and come back again next week for another episode of the Bisaya Buddy.

BB: More Personal Pronouns

Last week on Bisaya Buddy we learned about Personal Pronouns (You, I, He/She, They). But, there are more personal pronouns.  The pronouns we will learn this week are words that we don’t have in English!

These might be hard to grasp at first, but with a little though, I don’t think you will have trouble! You might even find that in this case, the Bisaya language is more specific than English is, because of the availability to address “You” in the group form, and We Inclusive and Exclusive. In English, we just say “You” whether it is one person or a hundred people!

Likewise, when we say “we” in English we might mean We being you and the person you are talking to, or you might be telling the person you are talking to that “we” are doing to do something with another person! It can get confusing if you consider it!With a little practice, this will become second nature to you, I know that is how it worked for me!

I hope you enjoyed this week’s lesson and will be back again next week for our next lesson!

Next week we are going to look at something that a LOT of foreigners make mistakes on when trying to say a few words in Bisaya!
